Re-finding happiness in business

If you have ever done sports or had a project hit the "valley of despair" you will know what I'm talking about.

Its that feeling when the joy gets sucked out of the activities associated with growing the business and from the figure skating world I grew up in, it can be compared to falling non-stop without nailing the jump.

Does this sound familiar?

Everybody is talking about "pushing through" the valley of despair and that the next level in your business or goals is "right around the corner" so "don't give up". And I agree. However, what kind of enthusiasm and energy are we able to project when doing the tasks that need to be done to push through? Are we not meant to be happy in the process?

I am a big fan of consuming carefully selected information - online webinars, books, podcasts where I can learn from people who have done what I want to accomplish. So when I was laying in bed after nearly 2 months of low-activity and energy, I got an invitation to log on to a business leaders experience exchange webinar live from U.K. What I learned totally changed my perspective.

One of the business owners shared how she had previously gone through depression and how she felt that the pandemic had started to have a similar early stage depression impact on her well-being. By being aware of this she had made a decisions to do things differently this time around. Around this time, a new product line had launched in her company and this proved to be a great opportunity for her to come out of the isolated digital life that most of us have become accustomed to, and make some calls to meet up with people.

Needless to say, these positive and proactive actions resulted in greater overall joy, energy, great conversations, memories and also helped to excel her business forward.

I have read many times that activity is the key to achieve goals, however I think its important to identify which kind of activities that also make us happy and give us energy, so that when we are in the state of numbness or negativity we can faster recognize what we can do to feel better.

After all, what is the point of having goals if there is little to no joy in the process?

Best,
